Support for "Dump the Pump" Day on June 21
MINNESOTA VALLEY TRANSIT AUTHORITY
RESOLUTION NO. 07-
APPROVING PROCLAMATION ESTABLISHING JUNE 21, 2007 AS THE SECOND NATIONAL DUMP THE PUMP DAY
WHEREAS June 21, 2007 marks the Second Annual National Dump the Pump Day to raise public awareness about public transportation and its environmental benefits by encouraging people to ride public transportation;
WHEREAS by dumping the pump and taking public transportation instead of driving a car, people can make a difference and help improve the environment;
WHEREAS by dumping the pump and taking public transportation instead of driving a car, people can save money consuming less gasoline while reducing our nations overall dependence on foreign oil.
WHEREAS public transportation plays an important role in protecting air quality by reducing smog-producing pollutants and greenhouse gases;
WHEREAS public transportation produces nearly 50 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) per passenger mile, as private vehicles;
WHEREAS U.S. public transportation use saves 1.4 billion gallons of gasoline per year the equivalent of 108 million cars filling up in a year;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT REOLVED THAT THE MVTA BOARD OF DIRECTORS will join with public transportation systems across the country and participate in the Second Annual National Dump the Pump Day on June 21, 2007 by encouraging citizens to ride public transportation;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT THE MVTA declares that by using public transportation, people help improve the environment and conserve gasoline; that public transportation is an important part of our nations transportation system and provides citizens with other options than driving a car; and that the MVTA will participate in the Second Annual National Dump the Pump Day.
