Proposed 2008 Fare Increase

In an effort to minimize the impact on those most needing transit and least able to afford it, and after careful consideration of the impact of various fare-increase scenarios, the MVTA adopted the following position:

n      The MVTA SUPPORTS the need for additional regional fare revenue as part of reducing the projected deficit.

n      The MVTA SUPPORTS increasing the prepaid fare discount available to the general public, therefore making a 25-cent across-the-board increase and elimination of the extra employer discount more tolerable.

n      The MVTA SUPPORTS the extension of the morning peak period from 3 to 3-1/2 hours.

n      The MVTA does NOT support the combination of a 25-cent across-the-board increase, elimination of the extra employer discount, and retaining the current publicly available discount levels.

n      The MVTA does NOT support the 50-cent peak express fare increase.

n      The MVTA does NOT support the creation of a zoned fare structure.
