Fare Policies - Current

I. Regular Route Fares

  1. Regular Route Fare Levels. The Regional Regular-Route fare levels as approved by the Metropolitan Council are implemented by MVTA. (96-24)
  2. Convenience Fares; Policy Fares. Metropolitan Council policies regarding the availability of reduced fares for pre-paid tickets (Convenience Fares) and policy fares for certain rider groups are implemented by MVTA. (96-24)
  3. Application of Express Fares. Express fares (at the level set by the Metropolitan Council) shall be charged for passenger trips on routes traveling via freeways into the downtown areas of the Cities of Minneapolis and/or St. Paul. (96-24, 05-026)
  4. Definition of Peak Period, Express Routes. Peak period fares on express trips shall be charged on trips designated as peak period trips. A trip shall be designated as a peak period trip if it falls generally within the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. or 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (96-24, 98-037, 03-036)
  5. Definition of Peak Period, Local Routes. Peak period fares on local trips shall be charged on trips designated as peak period trips. A trip shall be designated as a peak period trip if it falls generally within the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. or 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. (96-24, 03-036)
  6. Designation of Reverse Commute Trips. The fare charged on peak-period reverse-commute trips on routes 460, 465, and 489 (and their successor numbers in the event of simple renumbering) shall be the peak local fare. This policy shall be applied to additional peak-period reverse-commute trips on express routes at such time as they may be implemented. This policy shall not apply to MVTA-operated trips (if any) on Metro Transit routes including Route 180. (01-039, 05-026)

II. Dial-a-Ride Fares

  1. Authorization to set Dial-a-Ride Fares. The MVTA Board is authorized under MN Stat. Ch. 473.408, subd. 4, to set fares for circulator services in a downtown or community activity center area. (Mn Stat 473.408 subd. 4)
  2. Dial-a-Ride Fares Established. The fare charged for dial-a-ride service shall be $1.50 for adults and students, and $1.00 for seniors and Limited Mobility, with such policy categories identical to those established by the Metropolitan Council for Regular Route fares. (98-027)

III. Flex Route Fares

  1. Authorization to set Flex Route Fares. The MVTA Board is authorized under MN Stat. Ch. 473.408, subd. 4, to set fares for circulator services in a downtown or community activity center area. (Mn Stat 473.408 subd 4)
  2. Flex Route Fares Established. The fare charged for flex route service shall be:
    On-Route service: The regular route fare set by the Metropolitan Council for off-peak, local trips, including such Convenience and/or Policy discounts as may exist.
    Off-Route (deviated) service: The regular route fare set by the Metropolitan Council for off-peak, express trips, including such Convenience and/or Policy discounts as may exist.(98-027, 03-036)
  3. Transfer Privileges Passengers paying the Off-Route (deviated) fare shall be considered to have paid an express fare for the purposes of transfers to other routes. (98-027, 03-036)
  4. Designation of Route 440. Route 440 is designated as a deviating regular route service not subject to the fares under this section, but rather subject to the regular route fares as defined in Section I. (01-039)

IV. Feeder Route Fare Demonstration

  1. Authorization to set Feeder Route Fares. The MVTA Board is authorized under MN Stat. Ch. 473.408, subd. 4, to set fares for circulator services in a downtown or community activity center area. (Mn Stat 473.408 subd 4)
  2. Demonstration Fare Authorized. For the period April 3, 2004 through September 9, 2005, the fare charged on local regular route 432 shall be identical to the Flex Route fares as set in section III. This shall include the payment of off-peak fares on morning route 432 trips that include transfer privileges to peak routes 477 and 480. (04-014, 05-026)

V. Passengers Permitted to Ride for Free

  1. Certain Passengers Permitted to Ride for Free. Passengers in any of the following groups are permitted to ride without paying a fare. (05-026)
  2. Permitted Groups. The following are the groups permitted to ride without payment of a fare:
    1. Children younger than 6 years of age. No ID is required.
    2. Uniformed police officers, reserve, sheriffs deputies, meter monitors, and fire fighters. No ID is required.
    3. Non-uniformed police officers, reserve, and sheriffs deputies. ID is required.
    4. Attendants to disabled customers. ID of the customer being attended must carry the proper endorsement. (05-026)
  3. Special Categories. The following special categories of passengers may ride without payment of a fare but shall be recorded as special-revenue passengers to allow the collection of the fare from the paying organization:
    1. Metro Transit employees and retirees, with proper ID.
    2. Metropolitan Council employees with T endorsement on their ID. (05-026)
