Winter Weather

Jan. 21, 2026

Winter in Minnesota is cold, unpredictable, and requires preparation. Make sure you’re ready by reviewing our travel tips and safety recommendations. Stay up to date with service alerts by following the MVTA Facebook Alerts page, using the RideMVTA app, and viewing the MVTA Alerts page, all linked below.

  • Check your route and schedule before you leave.
  • Allow extra travel time for snow, ice, and extreme cold conditions.
  • If your bus is running late, please remember your operator is doing their best to navigate challenging road conditions safely.
  • Download the RideMVTA app or visit mvta.com/trip-planner to track your bus in real-time.
  • Wear warm layers, winter boots, a hat, gloves, and a coat.
  • With shorter daylight hours and snowy conditions, visibility can be limited. Wear bright or reflective clothing when possible.
  • Stand clear of curbs and snowbanks and wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before approaching.
  • If snow or a snowbank blocks your usual stop, wait at a nearby cleared area and wave the bus down.
  • If an operator determines it is unsafe to board at a stop due to snow or ice, they will allow riders to board or exit at the nearest safe location.
  • To report a recurring issue, contact Customer Service at (952) 882-7500 or submit feedback online.
  • Wait until the bus is fully stopped, use handrails, and take your time when boarding and exiting.
